1988 Piedmont/USAir Merger Video
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.4 месяца назад
Produced by Piedmont Airlines after the merger with USAir was approved, this video was intended to help make the combination of the two airlines as smooth as possible. It didn't. The $1.6 billion dollar purchase of Piedmont by USAir was, at the time, the most expensive airline merger in history. The merger was announced on March 9, 1987 and Piedmont's last flight was August 4, 1989.

In 1981, Piedmont Airlines was the sole sponsor of a short documentary titled “The Hawk and John McNeely." If you’re an animal or nature lover, you will really like the short film. I will post the link to the full documentary below. But the sponsor credit at the end it pretty spectacular. It fully credits Piedmont with footage of a 737 taking off as John and his hawk watch. This video hurts. Terribly. I was aircraft maintenance in ILM, EWR, INT and MCO. In ILM we used to power back OUT of the hangar and off the wash rack behind the hangar. I had to power back a FULL 727 off a gate in ______. The tow bar attach on nose gear sheared...the 727 was buried in a corner gate...and the crew was clueless....maybe afraid. But Captain Vogler knew me and asked me to perform the power back. Piedmont trained me...and I did it. Full of passengers. ( THAT was never a part of training though) Did the procedure...walked nonchalantly out of the cockpit, down the aisle, dropped the aft airstair and departed the premises. Raised the airstair...walked to the nose of the aircraft and saluted the Captain for ramp departure. This was the day before Thanksgiving 1988. I'm one confident SOB but, Piedmont Airlines allowed employees to take control. Piedmont employees were nothing short of family. The follow-up company MADE SURE THEY DESTROYED THAT LESS THAN ONE YEAR LATER! Piedmont cared about the customer....the follow-up company would have canceled the flight and every subsequent flight that day! Canceling a morning originating 727-200...on the day before Thanksgiving... would have ruined a bunch of folks holiday! This event was actually NOT my proudest moment at Piedmont...while it was still Piedmont. On my second day of actual line maintenance work, I was sent up to aircraft N752N to chance a reading light. No big deal. The gentleman offered to get up from his seat so I could perform the task but I said, "No need sir. I'll be out of here in one minute." I'll never forget his smile...as he stood when I was finished and shook my hand and sat back down. As I departed the flight attendant thanked me but went on to say, "you know who that is, dont you?" I shrugged my shoulders and said, " No ma'am. " She said, "That's Mr. Tom Davis. The founder and CEO of Piedmont. I'm sure you'll be hearing about this moment." She was right! Two days later a very nice letter , thanking me for my professionalism and politeness arrived from Mr. Davis, and given to me by the Station and Maintenance Manager. It was immediately and professionally framed and hangs in my office today at the NTSB.

The Airline Deregulation Act was the beginning of the end for the "glory days" of aviation. The merger mania killed some of the best airlines and the best airlines were not always the largest . The various carriers had unique styles and that is what made flying fun. Wish we could go back to when the flight was the best part of your journey. 😢

  • @jocelynharris-fx8ho

That is why I hated when they passed the Airline Deregulation Act which set merger mania into motion. Some of the greatest airlines in terms of style and personality, were swallowed up by the major carriers and made flying less fun and less exciting. In addition to Piedmont, I miss, Hughes Airwest, Air California, Frontier ( the original), Ozark, Texas International, North Central, Southern, Air Florida, Trans International, Wein Air Alaska, Aloha Airlines and Pacific Southwest. 😢

Starting in 1989, USAir made six unbroken years of losses totaling $3bn. It bought Piedmont and PSA for a total of $2bn in cash. The merger of USAir with those two carriers was an utter disaster. Catastrophic.

I used to fly a lot in the 80s and 90s and USAir always reminded me of Walmart of the air and there was always something wrong with the plane. As I recall, there are a lot of crashes at LaGuardia airport missed runway approaches, snow on the wings, etc.. I remember taking off from Philadelphia to LaGuardia and we lost engines as we took off the flight attendant just sort of laughed and said brace- as we glided back down to the runway when we landed. They just left us there. Nobody came to get us.

unfortunately deregulation in 1978 started the race to the bottom that killed 99% of the airline brands in existence in 1979. Leaving us with the dystopian flying experience we know today. National Airlines Northwest Orient Airlines Continental Airlines Western Airlines Eastern Airlines American TransAir World Airways Trans International Airlines Pam Am TWA Braniff Piedmont Allegheny PSA Ozark Airlines Air Florida Peoples' Express Midway Airlines America West Airlines Aloha Airlines That is just off the top of my head. All gone. Either out of business or forced to merge or be bought out. Ironic since people said that deregulation would open up the industry and allow for more competition and more absurdly - better service! Sure, that is how they sold it. A trojan horse. But one by one they all fell. Instead we got less and less competition and worse and worse service.
